YEAR 6 UNIT OUTLINES

 

TERM 1 – FORENSIC INVESTIGATORS – DO YOU HAVE A CLUE?

Students will:

  • Investigate the importance of forensic science in society
  • Gain knowledge of crime scenes and he recording of crime scenes
  • Learn about the many forms of forensic evidence
  • Investigate the composition and properties of material
  • Learn about the importance of law & justice systems within societies
  • Use a Comfit Kit to construct a likeness from an eyewitness account
  • Learn about the different blood types and listen to guest speakers from Pathology units
  • Listen to guest speakers from Police Forensics
  • Dust for fingerprints and make hand, foot and tyre moulds using latex and plaster
  • Visit the Police Museum in Brisbane

 

TERM 2 – ANCIENT OLYMPICS

Students will:

  • Research the history of the Olympics
  • Use a Web Quest to investigate sports, entertainment, religion, food and fashion in ancient Greece
  • Act in the role of a reporter to construct a newspaper article focusing on one aspect of life in ancient Greece
  • Create timelines that depict the history of the ancient Olympics
  • Research and discuss the aspects of ancient Greek life that has influenced us today
  • Culminate their findings in the presentation of a theatre/café for guests

 

TERM 3 – ANTARCTICA

Students will:

  • Examine the fragile environment that is Antarctica
  • Complete an Independent Study that involves researching and reporting upon a variety of aspects related to Antarctica (weather, location, flora, fauna, scientific research stations, history of exploration, food chains)
  • Listen to guest speakers who have visited Antarctica and view the clothing and equipment they used
  • Participate in a Whale ‘Watching tour to view the humpbacks that visit Hervey Bay from the Antarctic waters

 

TERM 4 – NATURAL DISASTERS

The purpose of this unit is to provide students with the opportunity to investigate a variety of natural disasters.  In so doing, the students will look at the geographical and climatic conditions which contribute to the occurrence of a natural disaster, the impact of this disaster on a community and how to be proactive in preparing for a natural disaster.

 

KEY Questions:

  • What is a natural disaster?
  • How are they different from any other type of disaster?
  • Where do natural disasters occur and why?
  • How can communities prepare for natural disasters?
