Term 1: Healthy Lifestyle Choices.

The students will become a ‘healthy lifestyles’ expert, and  understand the importance of healthy living and a healthy diet. Students will recognise the five food groups and the importance they have on our energy levels and the effect on our body if not eaten. They will become aware of the value of keeping fit and design a fitness game to share with their classmates. All students will research and learn about the functions of the digestive system, and give their report to the class. In our group work students will work co-operatively as a team member to promote either healthy food or exercise to the community.

 

Term 2: Gold.

During this term students shall be focusing on the Australian gold rushes in the 1850’s and explore:

·         The discovery of gold in Australia, and why gold is valuable.

·         What it was like to live in a ‘gold’ community during the gold rush era.

·         Mining methods and environmental impacts.

·         Examining rocks and minerals more closely.

The students’ tasks is to complete an Independent Study based on Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analysing, Evaluation and Creating skills.

During this term we will be visited by experts - a geologist and a miner to discuss their role and skills with the students, and we will be going on an excursion to the Kilkivan Gold Mine.

 

Term 3: From River to Reef.

In this unit, students will learn about the ways we can live in harmony with the marine ecosystems of the Mary River and the Great Barrier Reef. They will investigate some of the human impacts affecting the local marine environment and ecosystems. We will be visited by the Marine Park Authority and the Mary River Committee to talk about preservation and conservation. As our culminating experience we will be travelling to a 3 day camp at Mudjimba where we will be involved with related activities.

 

Term 4: Consumer Power.

Students will learn about being a consumer, needs and wants, goods and services, advertising and consumer rights and responsibilities. We will have an advertising executive visit us as part of our introductory work, and later in the term we will have an excursion to the Chronicle Newspaper and the Radio Station in Maryborough to view their roles. Students will work in their groups to design, plan, act out and evaluate an advertisement that promotes a product.
