Frogs v Toads
During this unit students will:
- investigate the effect of the introduced
cane toad on the green tree frog in their local environment
- research on the internet the requirements
needed to attract frogs to their local area
- construct and label a model of a suitable
environment for green tree frogs and then write an explanation of
why this model is frog friendly
- research other species of frogs and present
their findings as a PowerPoint
- observe the life cycle of a frog from
tadpole stage in their classroom and record changes in a "Tadpole
Diary".

Term 2 |
Mysteries of the Ancient Egyptians - How did
they do it? Ancient Egypt prospered
because of good use of the environment, organization and unity.
During this unit students will :
- compare the ruling of Ancient Egypt with
our 3 levels of government in Australia.
- research how the Egyptians adapted to and
used their natural resources eg The Nile for irrigation and write an
explanation of how a shaduf works.
- explore the use of natural materials and
their properties from Ancient Egyptian times to the present day. Eg.
gold, mud, papyrus, sand.
- Observe the effect of weathering and
erosion of Ancient Egyptian monuments by simple experiments in the
classroom.
- Compose a Haiku poem based on an Egyptian
theme.
- Use scale and ratio to recreate models of
the Ancient Egyptian pyramids.
- Enjoy an Egyptian feast and cook some
traditional foods of the time (or visit an Egyptian restaurant)

Term 3 |
Australian National Parks - Why should we
preserve them? National Parks have
been created to conserve culturally or scientifically significant
locations in their natural state. their preservation is the
responsibility of governments, community groups and individuals.
During this unit students will:
- share experiences they have had at National
Parks
- learn about the rules, conservation and
location of state and national parks
- listen to a National Park employee talk at
school
- locate and map the national parks that
exist in their state and in Australia
- research, prepare a poster or travel
brochure and report on one of the following World Heritage sites:
Fraser Island, Great Barrier Reef ( Yr 5) or Kakadu
- discuss and debate the importance of rules
that are used in national parks
- write a newspaper article to raise
awareness of the importance of conservation of our national parks to
be published in a class newspaper

Term 4 |
Tinana's Museum - Creating a Museum for Wide
Bay Museums have an important role
in society in relation to preserving history. In this unit students
will:
- demonstrate an understanding of the
benefits of museums in society
- discuss what exhibits will be included in a
museum for Wide Bay( Aboriginal culture, Maryborough Port, Early
Industry)
- Take a "virtual tour" of several state
museums in Australia to determine what type of objects are displayed
in museums
- demonstrate knowledge of how items are
displayed in museums
- visit a local museum to observe how items
are displayed
- in groups create an exhibit relevant to
their local area. This will include researching their topic of
choice, creating an artefact, writing labels, designing a layout and
giving an oral presentation
- invite family members and peers to attend
their classroom museum
